Shipping Day

I can't believe how fast the weeks are going by. Our moving coordinator notified us in March that we would be allowed up to 2400 lbs of household items to be sent to the mission home.
2400 pounds? Seriously?

I wondered how I would ever find enough stuff to equal that amount, or even come close to it.  Kim at Mesa Moving told me to just take the things that make me happy - and because of that, I may have come pretty close to that 2400 lb target. I packed family pictures, church pictures, towels, bedspreads, a sewing machine, books, Christmas decorations, and even our life size M&M guy. President Tye joked about shipping his motorcycle to the Philippines, but I singlehandedly hit the weight limit fine without it.

We asked our ward to donate short sleeve white shirts, belts, and socks for the local Filipino missionaries that will be assigned to our area. Our ward was more than generous with this service project - we even had one family that bought and donated 100 shirts from the local Mr. Mac store. The donations were also boxed up and added to our shipment.

Our things will now be transported to the Los Angeles Pier. There they will sit on the dock and wait to be loaded on a
"Slow Boat To Manila!"

UPDATE: I just learned that the Tye shipment weighed in at 1700 lbs. Maybe that means I can bring 700 more pounds back home from the Philippines in 2016. Ha-Ha! I'm just kidding, dear.

  1. Oh my goodness I am sooo excited that I found your blog!! My name is Becky Collins and I have been looking at random missionary blogs from those who have served missions in the Philippines because our son Myles Collins just got called to your mission the Philippines Cavite mission. He reports to the MTC on Aug. 14. You guys look wonderful and have a beautiful family! I will for sure be stalking your blog for the next two years!!! We just live in Draper and we were wondering if you guys will be having a farewell address anytime soon?

  2. Hi Becky, I am so glad you found our blog. The church has instructed us not to put names of missionaries or members on blogs for privacy sake, so for the next 3 years I will be keeping it up to date with pictures and general info. Just keep checking back and look for pictures of Elder Collins and the best mission in the world.
Our "opportunity to speak" will be on June 9, at 1:00. You are more than welcome to come - I would love to meet you.

    1. Sister Tye, our son, Elder Crocker, was just assigned by President Stucki last week as one of your office elders to setup and administer the finances for the new Cavite Mission. My sweetheart and I would love to attend your "opportunity to speak" on June 9th. We live in Sandy. What ward will you be speaking in? - Randall & Carolyn Crocker

  3. Dear Sister Tye, like Becky above, I, too, googled the new Cavite mission and came across your blog. Unlike Elder Collins who is entering the MTC in August, my son has been serving since December 21, 2011 and was told this past week that he will be reassigned from the Philippines Manila Mission to yours. In his most recent letter which he entitled "I Am Now a Pioneer..," he wrote: "I AM GOING TO THE CAVITE MISSION! I found out this morning from Pres. Stucki. I was (still am as well) shocked, but it is the Lord's will for this to happen. I look forward to being a part of helping this new mission get started..." It warms my heart to read your blog, and to vicariously feel of your spirit and enthusiasm of your call. Yours is another name I will add to my prayers. Elder Handy is my oldest child, and this has been a new and wonderful experience for me as a mother. I miss him like crazy, but wouldn't trade the growth I've witnessed for anything in the world. There are times, when reading his letters, that I feel he's become the teacher and me the student. I have felt the tender mercies of the Lord many, many times over the past 17.5 months and treasure them. I wish all the best to you as you embark on your call of service to a people my son has grown to love very, very much.

    1. Kathleen, what a beautiful note you have left me. What a thrill it will be to shake hands with Elder Handy and pass off a little bit of your love to him as I do. I have no doubt of the Lord's hand in this transfer, and in the next six months your son will witness the miracle he was sent to Cavite to preform. I completely understand your feelings of "he the teacher and I the student." I still get this feeling from my children who served missions and returned from 3-11 years ago. Their service and experience will forever be a blessing to me.
